Abstract

This research investigates science as a reference point for discourses produced by Brazilian presidents inaugurated in the 21st century, in tension with statements from the country's main scientific societies. It is theoretically and methodologically situated in Foucaultian discursive studies and relates to public communication and perception of science. The discourses analyzed consider science as a condition or means for achieving Brazil's development: sometimes economic development, within neoliberal rationality, and sometimes social development, including the democratization of access to science.
