Abstract

The climate crisis, coupled with social and economic inequalities, represents a challenge for rural communication in the 21st century. On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Juan Díaz Bordenave (1926-2012), one of the pioneers of communication for development, the article proposes a journey through the evolution of his communicational thinking corresponding to current proposals for contemporary forms of communication from rural and indigenous communities. The methodology consists of bibliographical research. It is concluded that his visionary contributions to participatory communication were and remain highly relevant for the communicative practices of peoples in Latin America, directly or through other authors who share the same principles and concepts.
